Born in Paris on 3 February 3, 1947, Danièle Hervieu-Léger is a French sociologist of religion, director of studies at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences in Paris.
She holds a law degree from the Faculty of Law of the University of Paris and graduated from the Institute of Political Studies of Paris 1 in 1967.
Active during the events of May 68 within the institute, she mobilized the members of the Saint-Guillaume Center. There, she prepared the competitive examination for the École nationale d’administration.
She holds a doctorate in sociology ( EHESS ) and a state doctorate in literature and human sciences ( Paris-Descartes University ).
Professional background
Danièle began her career at the CNRS Sociology of Religions Group , as a research officer, then director, from 1974 to 1992.
Director of studies at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences since 1993, she directed the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of Religious Facts (UMR EHESS/CNRS) from 1993 to 2004. She was editor-in-chief of the journal Archives de sciences sociales des religions from 1986 to 2004. Currently professor emeritus, she is a member of the Center for Studies in the Social Sciences of Religions (CeSor, UMR EHESS/CNRS).
She was President of the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences from 2004 to 2009. In these roles, she was particularly active in launching the project for a large campus for the humanities and social sciences in the new university map of Greater Paris. The project is now nearing completion: the Condorcet Campus, bringing together a group of higher education institutions and research laboratories around a large documentary facility, opened its doors in Aubervilliers in 2020.
She is married to Bertrand Hervieu , a French sociologist, specialist in rural and agricultural issues, former president of INRA. She is the mother of Benoît Hervieu-Léger, Judith Hervieu (wife of Véricourt) and Clément Hervieu-Léger , member of the Comédie-Française .
Works
A specialist in the sociology of religions, Danièle Hervieu-Léger has devoted most of her research to the sociological description and theoretical interpretation of religious modernity: secularization, individualization of belief, forms of religiosity and communalization, transformations of institutions. The questions of utopia, memory and religious change have been the common threads of her research since the beginning of her career.
A specialist in Christianity, she has worked particularly on the problems of transmission, conversion and formation of religious identities in modernity. Her most recent work concerns the processes of dislocation and reorganization of the Christian cultural matrix of European societies, captured, in particular but not exclusively, through the phenomena of “exculturation” and the patrimonialization of Roman Catholicism.
One of her recent books proposes, based on the dossier of monasticism, a problematization of the modalities of composition of Christian times (time of the world, time of the Church, eschatological time) in modernity.
